•Birth: 19 MAR 1831 in Orange County, North Carolina
Rachel and Joseph married in Osage Arkansas just after he had returned from California in 1855. Joseph Smith Jr had accompanied a large wagon train out of Arkansas that was led by Captain Medows. According to my family history, this was also the second trip to California of Joseph's neighbor, Alexander Fancher, who later died in the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Joseph returned a very wealthy man in late 1854 and married Rachel Phillips. It is believed he knew the Phillips family in Tennessee. It is believed, according to family tradition, that Rachel died from the results of an ectopic pregnancy. She died four months after the marriage. She is burried in Gobbler Cemetery in Osage Arkansas right next to Susan Compton Smith, Joseph's mother. The year after Rachel's death, Joseph married Ingober Byrd Poteet who had also lived in Overton County TN. It is believed that when Joseph Smith went to California in 1854, he took the southern route through Texas. James Poteet, Ingober's father, was on that train and he dropped off in Limestone Texas, near his friend Grey Bynum Fancher. Grey Bynum would have been the uncle to the same Alexander Fancher on that trip.
