LTC James Henry Reynolds
Birth: Feb. 3, 1844
Dun Laoghaire
County Dublin, Ireland
Death: Mar. 4, 1932
Greater London, England

Zulu Wars Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he was educated at Castleknock School and Trinity College where, in 1867, he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees. The following year, he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and was sent to India with the 36th Foot Regiment, but was invalided home with cholera. He arrived in South Africa in August 1874, where he accompanied the military expeditions to the diamond fields and to the Eastern Frontier. He was in charge of the field hospital at the Battle of Rorke's Drift, on the January 22, 1879, and was awarded the Victoria Cross for attending to the wounded under fire and for carrying ammunition from the store to the soldiers who were defending the hospital, although he exposed himself to cross-fire from the enemy in doing so. He remained at Rorke's Drift for some weeks after the battle to look after the wounded. He was then promoted to Surgeon-Major, was present at the final battle of the Zulu War at Ulundi in July 1879, and received his medal the following month from Colonel Glyn. He then returned to Ireland, and served as Surgeon-Major during the expedition to relieve Captain Charles Boycott during the Irish Land War of 1880. He retired from the Army in 1896, after twenty seven years of service, having reached the rank of Brigade Surgeon Lieutenant Colonel. He died 36 years later at the Empire Nursing Home in London, England. In the film "Zulu" (1963), Surgeon Reynolds was played by Patrick Magee. (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
