The only person from the New Ulm area to be captured by hostile Indians during the Dakota War. He was born in Berne, Switzerland on Jan. 12, 1852. He was just four years old when he came to America in 1856 with his parents. The family first settled in Mankato, then came to Milford township in Brown County in 1858. He was 10 years old when the Dakota War or "Sioux Uprising" broke out on Aug. 18, 1862. When he ran to warn the neighbors, he was captured by some Dakota. He was released after several weeks and said he had been treated very well.
In 1880, he was a school teacher in New Ulm and was a boarder at the home of Fredericka Smith. On Oct. 29, 1881, he married Bertha Krause (born May 23, 1857). She was the daughter of Ferdinand Krause, who was killed during the war. They had five children.
