Reverend Arthur Brooks, D.D.

Son of William Gray Brooks and Mary Ann Phillips

Fitted for college in the Boston Public Latin School; graduated at Harvard College, 1867; studied at Andover Theological Seminary, 1867-68, and graduated at the Protestant Episcopal Divinity School in Philadelphia, 1870; was ordained deacon in Trinity Church, Boston, by Bishop Eastburn, June 25, 1870, and ordained priest in Trinity Church, Williamsport, Pa., by Bishop Stevens, October 12, 1870. He was rector of Trinity Church, Williamsport, 1870-72; of St. James Church, Chicago, 1872-75; of the Church of the Incarnation, New York City, 1875-95.

He received the degree of Doctor of Divinity from the University of New York in 1891, and from the College of New Jersey in the same year. He was chairman of the Board of Trustees of Barnard College, New York City, and one of the Board of Overseers of the Divinity School in Philadelphia. He was also a member of Victoria Institute, or Philosophical Society, of Great Britain.

Arthur Brooks married the former Elizabeth Willard on 17 October 1872 in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.

In June of 1895, Reverend Brooks and his wife, travelled to Southhampton, Great Britain in an attempt to ease what had afflicted him. After remaining there several days, they returned to New York aboard the steamship on which they arrived; the S.S. Fulda on 08 July. Reverend Brooks' condition worsened, and was attended by the ship's surgeon, Dr. G. Schmach, when he died Wednesday morning at 6:00 am.
The Fulda arrived on the 16th, and docked at 2:37 that afternoon.
The primary cause of death was a tumor of the duodenum.

Reverend Brooks is buried alongside his brothers; Phillips, and Frederick.
