Jean Jacques Alexandre Alfred Mouton

Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Opelousas, Louisiana, h was educated at St. Charle's College at Grand Couteau and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1850. After serving in the Army, he resigned his post to pursue civil engineering with a railroad firm. He also ran a sugarcane plantation in Lafayette before the war. At the start of the Civil War, he accepted the commission of Captain, and was quickly promoted to the rank of Colonel and recruited the 18th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. Wounded at the April 1862 Battle of Shiloh, he returned to service as a Brigadier General in the Lafourche, Teche, and Red River campaigns. He was killed while leading his troops in the Confederate victory at the Battle of Mansfield on April 8, 1864. First buried on the battlefield, he was re-interred with his family at St. John's Cemetery in Lafayette, Louisiana on April 24, 1867. A United Daughters of Conferacy chapter and Sons of Confederate Veterans' camp in Louisiana are named in his honor. (bio by: Kelley G)
