JOURDANTON LOSES PROMINENT RESIDENT
A prominent Jourdanton resident and member of the business community, George A. Bohl, died Friday, October 30, 1987, after a lengthy illness. He had been a patient at Santa Rosa Medical Center for the past five weeks.

The son of Dora Pauline Schneider Bohl of Devine and the late Alex Louis Bohl, George Bohl was born near Devine on September 3, 1921. He attended Devine High School where he played varsity fullback on offense and linebacker on defense for the Devine Warhorses. He graduated in 1939 and enrolled in Texas Lutheran College in Seguin where he starred as offensive fullback and defensive linebacker for TLC's legendary "Wonder Team" of 1941-42.

The onset of World War II interrupted a promising football and college career when Bohl enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943. After boot camp, he was assigned to an Armed Guard Unit attached to the Merchant Fleet. As a result, Bohl served in almost all theaters of war until his discharge in 1946.

Back in civilian life, Bohl continued his education at Texas A&I University, Kingsville, Texas, where he earned both bachelor's and master's degrees in agriculture and education. He was employed as principal of Jourdanton High School from 1949-53 when he took over as superintendent of Jourdanton Schools.

Bohl resigned as superintendent in 1959 to accept the position of manager of Steinle Insurance Agency, a position he held until ill health forced his resignation.

In August 1986, he was instrumental in establishing the Bohl-Nickerson Insurance Agency in Jourdanton.

He began farming and ranching in 1960 and continued to be active in farming and ranching operations in Atascosa, Medina and Frio counties up to the time of his death.

Bohl married the former Teresa Dellana of Austin in 1953 and the couple had two sons.

A valued member of the Jourdanton Community, Bohl was an active member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and served as a member of the Parish Council. He was a member of the Atascosa County Council of the Knights of Columbus and was past secretary/treasurer.

Bohl worked actively with the Jourdanton Rotary Club and the Jourdanton Chamber of Commerce when his health permitted. For many years he served as election judge in Jourdanton.

Several years ago, doctors discovered Bohl was diabetic. In more recent years the progress of the disease necessitated dialysis and drastically curtailed the community involvement of the active businessman-educator.

This year Bohl was troubled with a pinched nerve which left him physically impaired. Doctors did back surgery to relieve the problem five weeks ago and the surgery was successful. However, Bohl was in a weakened condition and could not recover his former strength. He died October 30, 1987.

Services for Bohl were held Tuesday, November 3, 1987, at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Jourdanton.
