DAVENPORT - Funeral services and a Mass of Christian burial for Verdene A. Langford , 80, a resident of the Kahl Home and a former longtime resident of Bettendorf, will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 1506 Brown Street, Bettendorf. You are invited to join the family for a Christian Wake service Thursday at 4 p.m. to begin the visitation.

Mrs. Langford died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at the Kahl Home in Davenport, following a lengthy and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.

Verdene Agatha Niebur was born Dec. 17, 1927, in Lindsey, Neb., a daughter of Sylvester and Magdalene (Heiman) Niebur. She graduated from the former Marycrest College, Davenport. Verdene was united in marriage to Thomas Vincent "Mike" Langford on June 12, 1948, in Rock Island. He preceded her in death on Sept. 1, 1996.

Verdene dedicated her life to raising her family. She and Mike were blessed with 12 children whom she adored. She also assisted her husband in the family business, L&M Royal Blue Market in Bettendorf.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes, where she was an active volunteer and avid supporter of the school. She participated in the Lourdes Ladies Circle, and assisted with the Lourdes Library as well as numerous parish fundraisers. She also volunteered for The Salvation Army.

She was a wonderful cook and a talented baker. She cherished meals with the family, especially hosting the Sunday dinner. Verdene was a passionate football fan, and was many times referred to as a "behind the scenes coach." She was not shy about sharing her coaching advice. She could often be found at an Assumption High School or Bettendorf High School football game watching with enthusiasm.

Memorials can be made to Lourdes Catholic School, Embracing Our Future K-12 Catholic School Fund, Kahl Home or the Parkinson's Foundation.

Her husband, Mike, an infant son, Joseph Andrew, and a daughter-in-law, Tina Langford , preceded her in death. May they rest in peace.
