Bernice Rose (Kunkel) Nephew, 73, of South 70th Avenue West passed away Friday, June 8, 2001.
She was surrounded by her family in her home Friday morning when she was carried by the angels to live with The Father.
She was born to Katherine (Resch) and Leo Kunkel Sept. 24, 1927, in Pearl Lake, Minn. She was raised on farms in and around the Pine City area until she was in high school, and then she moved to Duluth. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1945, joined the Cadet Corps and went on to graduate from St. Mary's School of Nursing in 1948. She retired from St. Mary's Hospital Obstetrics Department in 1987. She married Richard ''Dick'' Nephew in September 1948, and they made their home in Duluth, residing in Fairmont Park for more than 45 years. Bernice was a former member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church and was active in the Christian Mother's Association and the Sunday school program. She was currently a member of St. James Catholic Parish.
Her parents; a brother, Jerome Kunkel; and a sister, Margaret Kunkel Wilson preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband, Richard ''Dick''; children Dale (Chris) of Duluth, John (Rose) of Proctor, Mary Beth (Jim) Boynton of Proctor, Katherine (Olli) Rahkola of Esko, Bob (Patty) of Duluth, Paul (Paula) of Proctor and Judy (Jeff) Dieryck of Duluth; brothers and sisters Ambrose Kunkel of Santee, Calif., Benedict (Jean) Kunkel of Big Fork, Minn., Norbert (Isabel) Kunkel of Cross Lake, Minn., Sister Francetta Kunkel SSpS of Techny, Ill.; her twin brother, Bernard (Lucille) Kunkel of Mapleton, Minn., Dolores Nystrom of Kimball, Minn., Leo A. ''Tony'' (Aggie) Kunkel of Rockford, Minn., Mary Catherine ''Cass'' Lee of Litchfield, Minn., and Sister Rita Kunkel OSB of St. Joseph, Minn.; 16 of the world's most wonderful grandchildren and three of the world's most beautiful great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday with a rosary service at 6:30 p.m. in Bell Brothers Chapel. Funeral Mass 1 p.m. Tuesday in St. James Catholic Church, the Rev. Fathers Charles Flynn and John Golobich officiating. Burial in Oneota Cemetery.
