Richard John ''Dick'' Nephew, 75, of South 70th Avenue West, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2001, in his home, surrounded by his family, when the angels came to take him to live in eternity with his wife of more than 50 years and The Father.

He was born Nov. 17, 1925, to Louis and Arla (Lindfors) Nephew. He lived most of his life in Duluth. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in the South Pacific aboard the LST 243. He married Bernice Kunkel in September 1948. He retired from U.S. Steel's Duluth Works in 1972 and then went to work for St. Louis County, first as a jailer and then in roads and maintenance. Dick was leader in the Boy Scouts of America, was active as Little League coach for the Far West league, and did volunteer work with the American Red Cross, teaching swimming and first aid. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, American Legion Post 71, and the former Holy Cross Catholic Church. He served on the Holy Name Society and several church boards.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Parish and had been very active until recently, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and helping with church and school maintenance.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice, on June 8, 2001; his parents; and brothers George (Jum), Maynard and Donald.

He is survived by his children Dale (Chris) of Duluth, John (Rosi) of Proctor, Mary Beth (Jim) Boynton of Proctor, Katherine (Olli) Rahkola of Esko, Bob (Patty) of Duluth, Paul (Paula) of Proctor and Judy (Jeff) Dieryck of Duluth; a brother, Stewart C. ''Dugan'' (Arlene) Nephew of Esko; a sister, Darelyn Washburn of Duluth; 16 beautiful grandchildren; three wonderful great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-7 today with a rosary service at 6:30 p.m. in Bell Brothers Chapel. Funeral Mass at 1 p.m. Monday in St. James Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Charles Flynn and the Rev. Father John Golobich officiating. Burial in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. West.
