Michiko Wakagawa said farewell to her beloved husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends on February 21, 2012 to find a peaceful existence beyond those she loved and cared for.
She was born to Tsunetaro and Gin Yasunaga in Seattle, Washington on June 30, 1918. At the age of 16, she was tasked with caring for her six brothers and sisters after her mother was killed in a car accident. She graduated from Broadway High School and Japanese Language School in Seattle.
To prevent being displaced during World War II, her father voluntarily moved his family inland to Wapato, Washington, where he owned a branch of Washington Wood and Coal. Despite his efforts, the family was relocated to Portland Assembly Center in June, 1942, where she rekindled her friendship with James Wakagawa, whom she had previously met in Wapato. Rather than being separated to different evacuation camps, they got married on August 29, 1942 and began a lifelong partnership that emphasized long days, hard work, and integrity.
As the center of the household, she managed to raise her children, help her husband on his farm, indulge in her creative hobbies, and get involved in community events. She was honored as the First Lady of Weiser in 1991, a member of Friends of the Hospital, a past member of Chapter T, P.E.O., a member of 20th Century Club, and belonged to the Church of the Redeemer.
Michi is survived by her husband, James; children, Dale and Joyce Wakagawa, David and Sheri Wakagawa, Sandy Wakagawa, and Suzanne and Ray Hart; grandsons, Ray and Kevin; granddaughters, Amy and Amanda; great-grandchildren, Cobin, Jayden, Dane, Kaia, Kaeli; sister, Kachiko Guinto and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the Heart and Home Hospice angels that cared for Michi. They led Michi on her final journey with dignity and grace.
A viewing will be held Monday, February 27th from 3-5pm at Thomason Funeral Home, 221 E. Court Street, Weiser. Services will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 1:00pm at Thomason Funeral Home, with interment to follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in memory of Michiko be made to Heart and Home Foundation; Chapter T, P.E.O., or Weiser Friends of the Hospital, c/o Thomason Funeral Home, 221 E. Court Street, Weiser, ID 83672.
