Jennie was born in Fort Madison, Iowa, the second child of Michael Eugene and Christiana Zimmerman. She never married and worked as a housekeeper. After her mother died, her father moved to Oberlin, Kansas, where she kept house for him. When her father died she moved with her widowed youngest sister, Amanda Zimmerman Anderson, to Colorado Springs, Colorado and then to Upland, California, where they shared a house until Jennie died.
