William married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Watson 1861–1930 in 1894. They had children Winifred Maud Mary 1896–1952, George Frederick Clark, LCdr 1898–1964, Jessie Florence Miriam 1900–1973 and Laura Elizabeth Maple 1902–2000.

H. T. Attfield, 2508 Orchard Avenue, Oak Bay. Mr. Winterburn; who was born in Whitby, Yorkshire, England, came to Victoria in 1910 and in 1917 and 1918 was surveyor and representative of the French government for vessels built for France at local shipyards.
During his residence here Mr. Winterburn associated himself with various clubs and organizations. He was well known throughout western Canada as leader in his profession and until his recent illness was a frequent contributor to leading naval and engineering journals. For several years he represented the Bureau Veritas on this coast as surveyor and also conducted a training school for marine and stationary engineers, Board of Trade certificates. Before coming to Victoria, Mr.
Winterburn lived in China and was interested in Hong Kong shipbuilding, being manager of a well-known drydock in the China port.
He leaves one son, Lieut. (E) George Winterburn, R.C.N.R., at present serving on a Canadian destroyer, and three daughters, two in California and one in Toronto; two sisters and a brother in England, and sisters in Holland and France, in addition to Mrs. Attfieldeld..
