Lewis Paine
Original name: Lewis Thornton Powell
Birth: Apr. 22, 1844
Death: Jul. 7, 1865

Lincoln Assassination Conspirator. He fought at Gettysburg as a Confederate soldier. He was hanged for his involvement in the assassination of President Lincoln. Lewis tried to murder William H. Seward, Secretary of the State in the plot to kill Mr. Lincoln. Seward's son was nearly beaten to death by Lewis, and William Seward was stabbed several times in the face, both survived. Powell was originally buried at the execution site, but during the next twenty years his remains were moved and reburied several times. In 1885 his skull (identified by a broken jaw bone, the result of a kick from a mule during Powell's boyhood) turned up as specimen # 2244 in the Army Medical Museum located in Ford's Theatre. In 1898 the skull was turned over to the Smithsonian Anthropology Department.
