Wilhelm Kern was born in the Duchy of Nassau (Germany), the son of Johann Andreas Kern and Maria Catherina Berges. He came to the United States with his parents, arriving through the Port of New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1853. The family then went up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers and settled in Clark County, Indiana. During the Civil War he enlisted as a private March 29, 1864, and was mustered into Company D, 53rd Indiana Infantry. His name appears on his enlistment as "William Keirn." Private Kern was mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, on July 21, 1865. He married (1) Elizabeth Daily (Sep 25, 1848-Jun 25, 1887) in Clark County, Indiana, on June 23, 1867. He married (2) Eliza Jane "Jennie" Heady (Feb 1849, KY-1911) about 1888. Whether divorced or widowed, Eliza was the mother of three living children when she married William (1900 US Census).
