BLACKWELL - Capt. Kenneth C. Sparks, Blackwell fighter pilot and state air hero, died Tuesday in an airplane crash in California, according to information received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George W.L. Sparks of Blackwell.

Captain Sparks, 24, was stationed at the field at Ontario, Calif., where authorities are expected to announce details of the crash.

The holder of the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross hung up a record of 11 Jap planes to his credit with six probables before returning to this country in October. He saw most of his 15 months of combat in New Guinea, and flew a P-38 fighter. He last visited in Blackwell in April.

Born at Woodward, July 17, 1920, he came to Blackwell with his parents when a small child and was graduated from the Blackwell high in 1938 and attended Northern Oklahoma Junior college at Tonkawa years during which he received his primary flight training. He enlisted in the air corps in September, 1941.

His survivors are his parents, his widow, Patricia, who has living at Venice, Calif., near the airbase; a sister, Dorothy; a half-brother, Arnold, in England, and a half-sister, Fay. (His daughter Melanie was born after his death in early 1945)
