He was born April 21, 1921, in Grandy, Minn., to Leonard and Anna (Sandin) Sundstrom. He attended country school near Grandy and in 1942 enlisted in the Army during World War II. He served in Normandy during the Battle of the Bulge and received the Bronze Star. On Jan. 11, 1947, he married Dorothy Johnson near Grandy. The couple lived in Mora, Minn., where James worked in the drying plant and later in construction. The family traveled extensively along the North Shore working construction, the Minneapolis area working for Park Construction, and to the Lake Vermilion area for 19 years working as a heavy duty mechanic in the construction industry. The couple retired to Hoyt Lakes in 1994. James was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and the Timothy Robinson VFW Post in Hoyt Lakes.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; children, Donald (Julee) Sundstrom, Diane (Bruce) Hallada and Judy (Bert) Whittington; granddaughter, Nicole (Paul Ollila) Sundstrom of Mountain Iron; a great-grandson; and a step-granddaughter, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Gerald and Roger.
Burial will be in the Hoyt Lakes Memorial Cemetery.
