As a carriage maker, he imported a Benz engine from Germany in 1891 and mounted it on a carriage, becomming the first person to drive an "automobile" through the streets of Indianapolis. (His vehicle is on display at The Indiana Children's Museum). He organized a motorcar manufacturing company in 1899. Also brother to Edward E. Black, the youngest Union Army solider at the age of 8.
