World War I British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. During the First World War, he served as a Captain in the 6th Battalion of The Yorkshire Regiment. During the period of September 21 to October 1, 1916, he was in command of the troops which held the southern and western faces at Stuff Redoubt, France. For four days and nights he held the position under heavy German fire and against several counterattacks. Although short of supplies and ammunition, his determination never wavered and when the enemy attacked in greatly superior numbers his troops held the position. He personally led a counter-attack which finally cleared the enemy out of the southern and western faces. For gallantry in action, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal on October 26, 1916. He later transferred to the
Army Education Corps, as an instructor and retired from actice service as a Colonel in 1947. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
