Capt. R.B. McGill, Sr., was the youngest son of Richard C. McGill, Sr. and Mary R. Daily, younger brother of Richard C. and Louisa, he graduated from San Jose High School, was of Veteran of WWI, he did officer training and ground school at the University of California – Berkeley, upon graduation he posted at Kelly Field, San Antonio, Texas. During his time at Kelly Field he became a flight instructor and before his discharge, December 27, 1918, held the posts of Acting Officer in Charge of Flying and Assistant to the Officer in Charge of Flying. He married Gertrude Alice Shafer of Los Angles, California while stationed at Kelly Field, San Antonio, Texas.
