Obituary - Daily Oklahoman, The (Oklahoma City, OK) - Sunday, March 4, 2001

MAUPIN Carey Addison, who passed away on February 25, 2001 at the age of 89, left the University of Oklahoma in 1936 to visit Santa Barbara and never returned. Encouraged to move to San Francisco to manage artists and craftsmen in the W.P. A. programs, Carey met and married M. Elizabeth (Betty) Ritchey.

When WWII broke out, Mr. Maupin joined the American National Red Cross spending two years as the Field Director in Alaska before he was transferred to Washington D.C. where he remained until 1946. Returning to the Bay Area, the family home was in MiIIbrae for over 50 years. During his career Mr. Maupin always worked to better the lives of others. For 18 years, Mr. Maupin was the Labor Relations Specialist for the Department of the Navy (WESTDIV).

After retiring he was invited by the U.S. Army to diversify the workforce, building the perimeter defense system in Fargo, North Dakota. During his second retirement, he indulged his love of antique clocks and trained himself in clock repair, a business he operated for over 10 years, closing after the death of his wife and partner, Betty in 1992. Born July 10, 1911 in Oklahoma City to the Honorable John and Grace Maupin, descended from William Maupin, a French Huguenot, who arrived in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1700, Mr. Maupin enjoyed researching the family history and attending reunions. Mr. Maupin enjoyed playing the piano and all forms of music.

A master storyteller, he was the devoted father of Bonnie Lee (Maupin) Bamburg and son-in-law Marvin A. Bamburg Sr. of San Jose and Romney Norton Maupin and daughter-in-law Caroline Wolff Maupin of San Carlos. He was the grandfather of Marvin A. Bamburg Jr., of San Jose and Heidi Bamburg Tucker of Seattle, and was beloved greatpampa to B.J. and Madeline Tucker and Cecile Bamburg.

He leaves sisters Jane Egli of Sunnyvale and Nova Moss and brother Charles Maupin of Oklahoma City and sister-in-law Dr. Gloria Maupin of Oceanside. Already deceased are a sister Francis Maupin and brothers Robert Norton and Chapman White Maupin. Never recovering from a fall eighteen months ago, he passed away peace fully in Los Gatos. He is missed by his family and all who stopped to join & sing a song or hear a bit of poetry. Private services and interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale were held March 2, 2001. Memorial donations may be made to History San Jose, or the American Red Cross.
