David was born in Boston, the son of David Pulsifer Kimball, a noted lawyer, financier and railroad executive. His Great Uncle was Moses Kimball, merchant, State Senator and founder of the Boston Museum; as well as a partner of P.T. Barnum. His mother was Clare Millet Bertram, the daughter of one of the wealthiest men in Salem Massachusetts, The sea captain and philanthropist, Captain John Bertram. David was a playwright, travelled extensively in Europe just prior to World War 1; and, following his marriage to Hellen Gardner settled in Santa Barbara. In 1919, he acquired a copyright to the play "The Clue", an adaptation of the novel by the same name of Carolyn Wells published in 1909.
