William Anderson Bloomfield
Birth: Jan. 30, 1873
Death: May 12, 1954

World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he served as a Captain in the Scout Corps, 2nd South African Mounted Brigade, South Africa British Forces. On August 24, 1916, at Mlali, German East Africa, when consolidating his new position after being heavily attacked and being forced to retire, Captain Bloomfield found that one of the wounded men had not been evacuated. At considerable personal risk he went back over 400 yards of ground swept by machine-gun and rifle fire and managed to reach the wounded man and bring him back to safety. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Major and awarded the Victoria Cross on December 29, 1916. He died at age 81 in Ermelo, South Africa. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
