| Birth: | Feb. 1, 1873 | | Death: | Jan. 8, 1901 |  2nd Boer War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. Born in Kilkenny, Ireland, he served as a Private in the 1st Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment, British Army. At Monument Hill, South Africa, in the late night of January 7 and early morning of January 8, 1901, Private Barry's position was attacked by enemy Boer forces. Although surrounded by the Boers, Private Barry fought and smashed the breach of his Maxim gun, thus rendering it useless to its captors. In doing so he gave his life for his fellow soldiers and country. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross Medal. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
