Born in Leeds, England, he served as a Sergeant in the 1st Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment, Green Howards, British Army. During the Battle of Paardeberg, South Africa, February 18, 1900, Sergeant Atkinson went out seven times under heavy and close fire to obtain water for the wounded. While returning after his seventh trip, he himself was wounded in the head and died a few days afterwards. For most prestigious gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross received by his father on August 8, 1902. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
