Mr. Smith died Friday, April 24, 1997 at 4:50 p.m. at the De Baca General Hospital in Fort Sumner, New Mexico due to a lengthy illness.

Mr. Smith was born December 22, 1921 in Kent County, Texas. He attended Red Mud Community School. He was a ranch hand for Swenson Ranch at the age of 13. He married Dorothy McCombs, July 11, 1942 in Spur. She preceded him in death November 5, 1995. Mr. Smith worked for many years for the Pitchfork Ranch and for Westex Cattle Company. He was a former member of the Guthrie School Board. Mr. Smith lived in Spur since 1991 moving to Fort Sumner in 1996. One son, Jimmy, preceded him in death September 29, 1996. He was a US Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Scott, Fort Sumner, New Mexico Jane Eason, Big Spring; one brother, Billy Smith, Stamford; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
