He married first at age 23 in Carley Brook, PA on July 3 to Julia Green. His life career was as a glass cutter which he had started some time prior to his marriage. They moved extensively in OH, WV, and ultimately CA where he worked at some reknown glass plants, including Dorflinger & Sons, and Monongah Glass Company in Fairmont WV. He and Julia had four children. Chester remarried after her death to Bertha.
