ARLENE LUCRETIA MARSTON CHARLES

Arlene Charles was the youngest daughter of William Frank and Mary Jane Clem Marston, of l03 N. Summit Avenue, Woodstock, Va. Born November 7, l905, in Woodstock, Arlene was 68 when she died December 30, l972, at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital of injuries sustained an hour earlier in an automobile accident in Woodstock.

Beautiful with striking auburn hair, Arlene was graduated from Woodstock High School and attended the Dunsmore Business College in Staunton, Va. She became secretary to the late Judge M. Locke Walton, Jr, Woodstock attorney and former trial justice of Shenandoah County. In later life she worked for the Hagerstown attorney Bruce Lightner.

On June 30, l937, Arlene was married to Clarkson Marion Charles, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Charles, of Hagerstown, Md. The family wedding took place in a noonday ceremony at the home of Arlene's mother, by then widowed. Vases of field daisies decorated the living room. His and Arlene's marriage was a truly happy union. Much of it was spent on their farm, Sunnyside, in Clear Spring, Md., until declining health forced Clarkson to cease farming, and the Charleses moved in l95l to Benevola, Md. There he joined the Fairchild Republic as a tool and die maker. At the time of the marriage, as a skilled, self-taught machinist, Clarkson helped maintain a fleet of delivery trucks and cars for the Troy Laundry in Hagerstown. He died on April l8, l963, of heart difficulties.

"I cannot imagine growing up in a better way," their son, Clarkson (Buzzie) Charles, Jr., commented in recalling his childhood growing up on the farm. Besides a son, Arlene and Clarkson were survived by two daughters, Mary Sue Beverage, of Medfield, Mass., and Patrician Ann Brackett, of Rehobeth Beach, Del., and three grandchildren.

Arlene and Clarkson are buried in the Charles family plot at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Clear Spring.
