Finis Gaston Cooper, M.D. was the eldest son of Abner Clay Cooper and the former Miss Margaret Jane Gaston. Finis was born at the home of his grandfather, David Finis Gaston, founder of Gastonburg, Alabama. A 1922 graduate of Columbia University Medical School in New York City; Finis Cooper did his residency at Los Angeles General.

On June 8, 1925, Dr. Finis G. Cooper married the former Miss Ethel Leone Burchfiel in San Francisco. They had made their home in the area around Los Angeles to raise their three known children: Margaret Anne, Nancy Lee and Robert Gaston.

Dr. Cooper was a distinguished surgeon and received many Honorary Alumnus degrees from medical schools around the world.

"The thing of which I am most proud, though, is that I gave the best service I could to my surgical patients, instrumental in helping to found the biggest private hospital in California, and was its first Chief of Staff. In this I tried to live up to the tradition of the Wilkinson and Gaston physicians I had known and idolized as a child..."
