Born and raised in Woodson County, Kansas, Boyd had an older brother, Maynard, and three younger sisters, Annabel, Mary Beth and Wilma.

Boyd graduated from Kansas State Agricultural College in 1920 with a degree in Agronomy. He was a member of Alpha Zeta and Tri-K. After graduating, he moved to Alhambra, California with his sisters Mary Beth and Wilma, and his widowed mother, Lizzie.

On 17 December 1932, Boyd married Gladys Flippo, and they resided together in Alhambra until her death in 1980. He is buried with her in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
