William Monroe Cato was the son of William and Jessify "Jessie" (Kelley) Cato. He had 4 brothers and 2 sisters: Henry Calvin, Ira Dell, Tellis, Herbert, Mary E., and unnamed female. He first married Nancy Elizabeth "Lizzie" Slaughter on Nov. 10, 1895 in Johnson Co., IL. They had 2 children: Herman and Beulah. After his first wife's death he married Minnie Harris about 1902. They had 4 children: Nola L., Ola, William, and Blanche. According to his WWI draft reg. card in 1918, he listed his occupation as timber worker in Johnston City, IL. At his death, it listed his occupation as road builder W.P.A.
