Reporter, Martinsville, Indiana - April 1925:

There is a reaper whose name is Death,
And with His sickle keen,
He reaps the bearded grain at a breath
And the flowers that grow between

As the sheaf of ripened grain falls before the sickle, so has this one whose years number to almost four score years and ten, fallen before the Grim Reaper. Jonathan W. Skaggs was born in Morgan County, Indiana, February 12, 1836. His long life was spent in his chosen occupation, farming in which he was very successful.

He was married to Catherine E. Clarke, March 13, 1888. To this union were born five children, three sons and two daughter --- S. B. Skaggs of Moran, Kan., Thomas M. Skaggs, of Linton, Ind., and Joseph E, Skaggs, who lived at home with his father; Mrs. John M. Bailey, of Indianapolis, and Mrs. R. C. Hamilton, living near her father's home. His wife passed away almost four years ago leaving him with his son to live on in the old home that had been his for more than fifty years.

After several years of failing health and afflictions his long life came to an end on April 28, 1925, at the age of 89 years two months and 16 days. Those who knew him best knew what a quiet, gentle nature was his attending strictly to his own affairs and speaking evil of none. He will be missed by many, but oh! how sadly missed by those who loved him best. His long life of usefulness is over. He is now resting from his labors.
