Elsa received her education in the Ellsworth schools, graduation from high school and then entering nurses training in the Ellsworth Hospital School of Nursing. She passed her state board examination and was given her RN degree in December of 1926. She worked in the Ellsworth Hospital and for three years in the hospital at Lincoln, Kansas, where she was a surgical nurse.
After her marriage to Clyde, she worked as a Registered Nurse in the Russell City Hospital, Russell, Kansas. For some 40 years she continued her nursing career, retiring in 1966 due to failing health.
Elsa and Clyde's home was brightened and life made fuller when Irma Jean was adopted and became part of their family. They opened their home for several years to their niece, Carol Ann Armbrust, after her mother's death. When Clyde's brother Preston Carter died, their nephew Kent, lived with them as he finished high school. They also maintained a keen interest in the welfare of his other children, Daryl Carter and Joyce Carter Patterson, as they became part of their family.
Elsa began her early Christian life in the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Ellsworth, Kansas. She was baptized and confirmed there, taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir. She was a member of the Church Walther League and worked with that youth group as long as she lived in Ellsworth. In Russell she sang in the church choir for several years at the St. John's Lutheran Church, of Russell, Kansas.
