The Russell State Bank of Russell, Kansas is where Clyde Leon Carter began work on 7 September 1928 as a Stenographer -- "a Shorthand Tosser." He reached a 40 year milestone of service as Executive Vice President.
He had graduated in the spring from high school and was getting ready to put in a wheat crop on rented land adjoining his farther's farm when he went to word at the bank. He had no other employment except for the 1942-1945 period when he was in the service in Europe, most of the time in England, and the rest in France. He was in the Army as a technical sergeant on "reverse land lease -- believe it or not," he says -- "this was one time the foreign countries gave us something, instead of our giving to them." While Clyde was in England he tried to look up some information on the Carter ancestors, but had no luck at all.
He started work in the headquarters building now occupied by Unified District 407 Schools and moved to the handsome new modernistic building at 507 Main Street with the bank on 26 June 1967. Mr. Carter is a member of the Kansas Bankers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, Elks Lodge, and the Russell Kansas Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Carter and his family belong to the St. John's Lutheran Church, of Russell, Kansas.
Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Michael Fibranz presiding.
