Burnie W. Barnes, a resident of Route 1, Water Valley, died Monday at his home. He was 74.
Services were Wednesday at Hornbeak Funeral Home with the Revs. L.E. Moore and Charles Jobe officiating and burial in Camp Beauregard Cemetery. Masonic services were conducted Tuesday evening.
Pallbearers were Randal, Steven, Chris and Jordon Barnes, Robert Brown, Josh, Michael, Joel and Justin Hoblet. Honorary pallbearers were Darrell, Jim Ed and Joe Crass, Bobby Hopkins, Ray and L.J. Boyd, J.W. McKenzie, Duncan Alexander, M.H. Russell, Donnie Via, Neville Mays, Raymond Bennett, J.C. Grissom, Howard Lawrence, Wayne Latta Jr., Harold Clark and Milford Jobe.
He is survived by his wife, Osella Boyd Barnes, to whom he was married January 1934; three daughters, Judy Brown, Wingo; Ouida Hoblet, Convoy, Ohio; Carol Pounds, Fulton; four sons, the Rev. Gayle Barnes, Gerald Barnes, Roger Barnes and Mike Barnes, all of Water Valley; a sister, Margaret Grant, Detroit, Mich; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His parents, Benjamin L. Barnes and Belle Pewitt Barnes, a daughter, a brother and a sister preceded him in death.
A native of Graves County, he was born Oct. 1, 1915. He was a retired farmer and a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Bayou de Chien Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Water Valley Masonic Lodge 756, serving as a three-term past master; and American Legion Post 26.
