Born in Marietta, Ohio, he became a wealthy businessman and partner with his father in Selby Oil and Gas Company (which later created Texaco Oil Company). He had vast holdings in the oil and mining industries.
He married Mariah "Marie" Minshall, his hometown sweetheart at age 24 on January 31, 1908 in the First Presbyterian Church of Marietta, Ohio. They moved to Sarasota in the early 1920s and lived there until their deaths. Despite their enormous wealth, he and his wife Marie lived a quiet and unostentatious life in their modest spanish-style home on the bay in Sarasota, Florida. They had no children.
After his wife's death in 1971, she bequeathed their Sarasota waterfront home and then seven acres of landscaped property to the community as a botanical garden "for the enjoyment of the general public."
This was the beginning of today's 14-acre Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, a respected center for research and education. Approximately 180,000 visitors tour the gardens and center each year.
In October 2001, William and Marie Selby were reinterred in front of the 1920s Spanish-style, 2-story home they built on the grounds. A contemporary, triangular-shaped fountain pays tribute to their memory as well as marks the location where they're buried.
