Commager was a well-known historian who was best known for being the author of over 40 books and 700 papers, as well as being an outspokien individual on the topics of McCarthyism, the Vietnam War, and Civil Liberties. He also taught at Columbia University, New York University, and Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts, for many years. Commager was the author of, "The Growth Of The American Republic" (1930), "Documents Of American History" (1939), "Theodore Parker" (1936), "Readings In American History" (1939), "The American Mind" (1951), "Freedom, Loyalty, Dissent" (1954), and "Freedom And Order" (1966), "The American Character" (1970), "A Concise History Of The American Republic" (1976), and "Commager On Tocqueville" (1993), and many others.
