British Army General, Colonial Leader. A Major General in the British Army, he founded Johnstown, New York, the Saint John's Episcopal Church and the first free school, and was the Superintendent and Colonel of the Six Nations of the Iroquois. He was married Molly Brant, the sister of famed Mohawk Indian leader Joseph Brant. He was originally buried beneath the altar of the stone church but it was burned down during the American Revolution. The new church was built and his grave was lost. His grave was located by Reverend Kellogg in 1862 and it was then sealed on June 7, 1862. It now shares the block with the new church called St. John's Episcopal Church and four plaques describe his life and contributions with the last plaque next to his grave.
