Captain Rains, born near New River, Virginia, about 1750, and died in Nashville, Tennessee, and became prominent at once in the new settlement . As early as 1769, he had visited Tennessee, penetrating as far west at the Cumberland River. He had singular skill in woodcraft, and such prowess as an Indian fighter as to have been placed more than once in command when the savages were to be chastised. The legend is that he had an intense love of nature, but little patience with the refinements of cultivated society. "All was health and harmony among us till the doctors came, bringing disease and the lawyers sowing dissensions--and we have had nothing but death and the devil since!" was an expression accredited to him. Yet, while gruff and believing that the definition of political freedom was a state wherein every man did as he pleased without encroaching upon the rights of his neighbor, he was a fine citizen and possessed the friendship of the community.
