Eloise Tindale Van Ness, 89, of Inverness, died Feb. 14, 2012, at her granddaughter's home in Brookhaven, Mississippi. With her daughter Ricki and her two granddaughters by her side.
A native of Archer, Florida, she was born March 25, 1922 to the late Calhoun and Alice (Thomas) Tindale, and spent most of her life in Citrus County. She was married to the late Mike Van Ness for 62 years. He preceded her in death on May 11, 2003. Eloise worked beside her husband, assisting him with all the responsibilities of owning and operating a ranch and farm. She was also a bus driver for the Citrus County School System and for her church, the First United Methodist Church of Inverness. Always active in her community, she served on the Citrus County Fair Board, serving as Livestock Committee Chairman; Leader of the 4-H Club Ease's Roughriders; Charter Member of The Citrus County Cowbells; and a Director of the 4-H Foundation. She was honored for her dedicated work with these organizations, being awarded the title of Fair Director Emeritus, and was presented the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce's Fitzpatrick Heritage Award; recipient of the Citrus County Cattlewoman of The Year award and was nominated by the Florida Dept. of Agriculture for the Woman of the Year in Agriculture. Eloise played a significant role in forming the character and serving as a role model for many of our Citrus County youths within the 4 -H program and the county fair's livestock program.
Eloise is survived by two children, Eloise "Ginger" Whitton Jackson of Pine Ridge and "Ricki" Abbe who resides in Montana; numerous nieces and nephews; eight grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, June Hinkle, in 1979 and her two brothers, Glenn and Doyle Tindale.
Friends may call at the Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. Her life will be celebrated at a Service of Remembrance on Monday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. from the Eloise Van Ness Arena located on the grounds of the Citrus County Fair. Burial will follow in the Van Ness Family Cemetery. The family is encouraging those attending to dress casually in their Western attire. In lieu of flowers, family and friends are encouraged to contribute to a 4- H Scholarship to be established in Eloise's memory. The memorials may be mailed to the Citrus County Fair Office, 3600 S.
