Upon his return from duty in Asia in 1862 he resigned his commission as a Lieutenant and in March of the same year took the same rank in the Confederate Navy. In 1864 he took command of the “Shenandoah”, a ship that remained in action after the Confederacy fell as Waddell was not informed of the end of the war and the South's defeat until August of 1865. Later in his career he was the master of a passenger ship that sailed between San Francisco and Yokohama. (bio by: Izzebella)
