United States Navy Admiral, "Father of the Nuclear Navy." Developed the 1st nuclear powered submarine USS Nautilus (SSN 571). Admiral Rickover was born in Makow Russia on 1-27-1900, that part of Russia is now considered a part of Poland. He moved to the United States with his parents when he was 6. He attened the US Naval Acadamy (1918-1922) and later attended Columbia University where he earned a masters in Electrical Engineering. During his naval carear he served many honorable duties including: Commander of the USS Finch (July 1937), Head of the Electrical Section of the Bureau of Ships, and Commanding Officer of the Naval Repair Base in Okinawa Japan. He was assigned to the Atomic Energy Commission laboratory in 1946 where developed the first nuclear powered submarine USS Natilus which took to the seas in 1955. He was awarded many military honors and medals including: Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Navy Commendation Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. In recognition of his service during wartime, he was named Honorary Commander of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. He was twice awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for exceptional public service. He also recieved the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest non-military honor. He died July 8, 1986 and was buried with full honors at Arlington National Cemetery. (bio by: Lori Richards)
