Mr. Pence was born August 23, 1929, in Page County, and was a son of the late Edgar Franklin and Sarah Elizabeth Alexander Pence.
Mr. Pence was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Shenandoah. He was a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean War and received the Bronze Star. Mr. Pence was a life member, quartermaster and former post commander of Avis O. Comer VFW Post 8613 in Shenandoah. For a number of years, he was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader of Troop No. 8 in Shenandoah. He retired from the N&W Railroad in 1978.
On January 2, 1954, he married Mary Florence Price Pence, who survives. He is also survived by three sons, Frank A. Pence Jr. and Steven Lee Pence, both of Shenandoah, and David Wayne Pence of Greencastle, Pa.; one daughter, Carolyn Sue Graves of Powhatan, Va.; one brother, Robert N. Pence of Vienna; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Thursday, February 16, 2012, at the Kyger Funeral Home Chapel in Elkton with the Rev. Hudson Nuckols officiating, with military rites by the Avis O. Comer VFW Post 8613. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the memorial service.
