Adrian Vander Tuin (= Of the Garden) was the last of ten children and seven sons, very probably named for his aunt Adriaantje van der Tuin (1864-1947 Friesland, Netherlands). He was born on his parents' farm in section 10 of Clark Township, two miles west and one mile south of the Dutch agrarian settlement of New Holland, Douglas County, in the southeastern part of South Dakota, not far away east of the Missouri River.
On May 7, 1910 Adrian Van Der Tuin (1 years and 10 months old, born in South Dakota), his father Johannis Van Der Tuin (63, Holland, farmer), mother Mary (47, Holland, mother of 1 deceased and 9 living children), and siblings John (19, Holland, home farmer), Hilda (17, Holland), Lizzie (13, South Dakota), Sip (12, South Dakota, home farmer), Albert (10, South Dakota) and Bonna (8, South Dakota) were living at a rented farm in Clark Township, Douglas, South Dakota.
In February 1920 Adrian Vandertuin (11), his father John Vandertuin (73, farmer), mother Margret (53), and siblings John (30, Holland, farm laborer), Johannes (29, Holland, farm laborer), Anna (25, South Dakota), Sip (22, farm laborer), Albert (20) and Bonne (19) were living in Clark Township, located immediately southwest of New Holland, Douglas County, South Dakota.
In January 1927 his father Johannes van der Tuin died at the age of 80 years in New Holland, South Dakota.
In April 1930 he was living with his mother, widow since 1927, and three siblings still on the original Vander Tuin farm, 2,5 mile southwest of New Holland. Adrian is then a farm laborer at a general farm, very probably on the Vander Tuin home farm.
On November 21, 1934 Adrian married in Douglas County the one year younger Johanna Feenstra, who had Dutch parents too. Adrian's brother Bonne married in 1927 to Rickie Feenstra, a sister of Johanna.
Ed and Joanna had from end 1937 until August 1945 three children, John, Margaret and Everett.
In April 1940 farmer Adrian Vander Tuin (31), his wife Johanna (30) and their son John (2) were living on a rented farm in Clark Township, located a few miles southwest of New Holland. Adrian and Johanna lived there too in 1935. Right next to them lived his mother Margaret Vander Tuin (78) and his brothers John (51, carpenter) and Johannes (49, farmer) were living, also on a rented farm.
Between 1940 and 1945 the family moved from the original Vander Tuin farm, 2 1/2 mile southwest of New Holland, to a farm 3/4 mile south of New Holland, where they lived with Ed's two oldest, unmarried brothers, John and Hannes. The Vander Tuins raised corn, oats, alfalfa, prairie hay, cattle and hogs.
Ed died in November 1994 at the age of 86 years at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Corsica, Douglas County. His widow Joanna (Feenstra) died less than a year later, in August 1995, at the age of 86 years too.
