He also served as Dean of Agriculture and Home Economics at the University of Manitoba, from 1946 to 1951, Associate Editor of the Canadian Cattleman, Agricultural Editor of The Western producer, Contributor to the Farm and Ranch Review, Candidate for Mayor of Brandon, Manitoba, in the byelection, Alderman for Calgary, Alberta, from 1953 to 1958, Mayor of Calgary, Alberta, from 1963 to 1965, Member of the Legislative Assembly for the multi-member Electoral District of Calgary, Alberta, in 1955, and Leader of the Liberal Party of Alberta from 1958 to 1960. MacEwan also served as a Member of the Board of Directors of the Alberta Historiacal Foundation in 1976, and Chairman of the Board in 1978. He was also honored with Honorary Law Decrees from the Universities of Alberta in 1966, Calgary in 1967, Brandon in 1969, Guelph in 1972, Saskatchewan in 1974, the Governor General's Conservation Award in 1985, and the Premier's Award For Excellence in 1985, and was the author of the works, "Breeds Of Livestock In Canada" 91941), "Sodbusters" (1948), "Hoofprints And Hitchingposts" (1964), "Power For Prairie Plows" (1971), and "Grant MacEwan's Journals" (1985).
