OBITUARY: Au -- Mrs. Laura J. Au, widow of Capt. Christopher Au, died Monday evening at 6 o'clock at her home, 179 North Benton street, at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 13 days, she having been born in Locke township, Cayuga county, New York, November 16, 1829. Her husband, to whom she was united in marriage June 27, 1848, died January 16, 1909, and her oldest son, John, died a week later.
She is survived by two sons, Sherman G., and Abraham, and one daughter, Mrs. P. M. Ringer, all of this city. Funeral services at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. S. K. Mahon of the Central Methodist church.
A dramatic incident in the life of Mrs. Au, occurred during the civil war while her husband was at the front. In instilling into the minds of her children a patriotic devotion to their country, she had made for them a flag and unfurled it in the front yard at their home. A man of the community, who was a southern sympathizer, threatened to tear down the flag, but when this was attempted she made a brave defense and the flag was allowed to wave without further molestation."
