Luke O'Connor
Birth: Jan. 20, 1831
Death: Feb. 1, 1915

British (Irish) Victoria Cross recipient, notable as the first soldier to perform an action which was so rewarded. (It is worth mentioning that Charles Lucas, the first sailor to receive the V.C., was Irish, too.) Luke O'Connor was born in Elphin, County Roscommon. In 1849, he enlisted in the 23rd. Regiment, which became the Royal Welch Fusiliers. The following year, he was promoted to Sergeant. He was decorated for his bravery at the Battle of Alma, which took place on the 20th. September 1854, where he was one of the centre sergeants, advancing between two officers carrying the regimental colours. One of these officers (Lieutenant Anstruther) was shot dead, and Sergeant O'Connor was wounded in the breast. In spite of this, he snatched up the colours and carried them until the end of the fighting although, because of his wound, he was urged to relinquish them and go to the rear. For this he received, not only the V.C., but the Sardinian and Turkish medals, and was promoted to the rank of Ensign. Later, he served in the Indian Mutiny at the Relief of Lucknow (1857-8) and in the Ashanti Expedition in West Africa (1873). In 1887, he became a Major-General; and, in 1913, he was knighted by King George V. Luke O'Connor was one of the 62 veterans of the Crimean War who, on the 26th. June 1857, were presented with the Victoria Cross by the Queen in the first such investiture. His medal is now in the museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers in Caernarvon, North Wales.  (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
