The death of D.B. BERNARD occurred at his home Friday last. The deceased was 83 years of age. He leaves a widow two sons and a daughter. He was postmaster of Calais for some 12 years. Samuel G. PIKE, brother-in-law of Mr. Bernard, accompanied by his wife, left his home only a few days ago for a trip west but arriving in Boston decided to return to Portland to await the result of his indisposition. Here his case became critical and a telegram was received by his son Henry D. PIKE on Thursday summoning him to Portland at once. He arrived a few hours before his father's death. Mr. Pike's remains arrived by Sunday morning train and Tuesday they were carried to the family lot in the Calais cemetery and buried beside two daughters. Mr. Pike was 75 years of age. The sympathies of the community have been called out in an unusual degree for Mr. & Mrs. S.G. PIKE who have been called within a few months to follow two beloved daughters to the grave. (St. Croix Courier, February 22, 1875)
In the 1870 U.S. Census, flour merchant Samuel G. Pike, 57, born Maine, was living in Ward 4, Calais, Maine, with Ellen, 52; Addie G., 24; store clerk Henry D., 21; and Nellie, 18, all born in Maine. Living with them was domestic servant Emma Wilson, 20, born Canada.
In the 1860 U.S. Census, Samuel G. Pike, 48, born Maine, was living in Ward 4, Calais, Maine with Ellen, 42; Addie G., 15; Henry D., 12; and Nellie, 8, all born in Maine.
In the 1850 U.S. Census, merchant Samuel G. Pike, 38, born Maine, was living in Calais, Maine, with Ellen, 28; Adeline G., 5; and Henry M., 2, all born in Maine. Living with them were Kate Gafflin, 22, and laborer David Donahue, 44, both of Ireland.
