Nicknamed "Prince Hal" during his career, he played Major League Baseball as a pitcher for thirteen seasons (1931 to 1942, 1946) with the New York Giants. He was selected to two National League All-Star teams (1933 and 1935), played in two World Series (1933 against the Washington Senators and 1937 against the New York Yankees) and won 23 games in 1934. His career record was 158 wins, 121 losses, 906 strikeouts, and a career 3.36 earned run average.
