Gertrude Mirto Tervenski, 89, died Election Day, November 4, 2008.

The daughter of Carlo and Frances Mirto, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Louis Tervenski who died in 1995 and brothers, Pete, Sam, Sal and sisters, Josie, Jen and Babe.

She is survived by her beloved daughter, Sharon Benin and her husband, Italo and grandson, Michael, and by her son, Brian Tervenski, his wife, JoAnn and grandchildren, Elizabeth and David and many nieces and nephews.

Gertrude Tervenski was a woman of the Great Generation. She survived the depression and World War II, and the excesses and tribulations of the years that followed, and through hard work and courage, she and Louis built a family, bought their own home and educated their children. She taught them through her sacrifice to love others, never to hate, to believe in equality, to work untiringly, to laugh with joy, to read books and talk about ideas, never to loose faith, to get up after you fall.

She worked in her home, her garden, and at many part time jobs to help her family. She did without luxuries, but opened her home to family in need and there was always room for one more at her table. She always kept her dignity and her independence and was thankful for others help.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Church, The Polish Club and Woman's Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In retirement, Gertrude and Louis were dedicated to their grandchildren and to their nieces, Michelle and Traci and spent many happy hours with them.

Gertrude's family wishes to thank the caring staff on the third floor of the Pines Nursing Home who adopted her as their Nana. Gertrude was a remarkable, loving, caring woman and those whose lives she touched will always take joy in her memory.

Visitation will be Friday, 4-7 pm at Parmele Funeral Home, 110 Fulton Ave., Poughkeepsie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, 10:15 am from Holy Trinity Church, 775 Main St., Poughkeepsie. Interment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. I
