Maurice "Morrie" P. Dahmen, 71, of Scanlon died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, in his home.
He was born Jan. 19, 1929, in Proctor to Oliver and Minnie (Kelszenberg) Dahmen. He grew up in Proctor and graduated from Proctor High School in 1946. He served in the Marine Corps on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Phillipine Sea. He worked for the DM&IR Railway in Proctor.
He was united in marriage to Marilyn Holmes at St. Casmir's Catholic Church in Cloquet on August 21, 1954. He graduated from the University of Minnesota-Duluth with a teaching degree and later received a double master's degree in education from UMD and the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He taught and coached in Cass Lake and then at West Junior High School's physical education department in the Duluth school system.
He also taught adaptive physical education in Duluth for many years. He and his wife owned Landmark Realty Property and the Grand Avenue Dairy Queen in Duluth from 1969 until the present. He also operated the Safari Cafe at the Duluth Zoo from 1986 to 1988. He was on the Scanlon City Council for 18 years. He was a member of the Moose Club, the American Legion, Eagles Club and St. Rose Catholic Parish in Proctor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marilyn in 1987; a granddaughter, Natalie Nelson in 1978; and a brother, Lloyd.
He is survived by a daughter, Kim (Brad) Nelson of Duluth; a son, Troy Dahmen of Minneapolis; grandchildren Matt Nelson, Andrew Stransky and Gus Nelson; and a special friend, Ann Lundsten.
Interment was in Oneota Cemetery.
